Be Inspired and Learn Something New
Photography trends come and go.
Somewhere during the rise of creative Photoshop editing, and the primordial soup of social media ushered in the era of the textured photo.
These were a couple of images I created in Normandy, France from that time period. If you look closely, you can see the texture on the left is the same texture featured at the top of this post. Both are details of an old gas pump. The texture on the right layered with the town hall and birds was from a photo I took of some crunchy snow.
Those early creations were often the result of several laborious hours of blending layers, textures, and toning to get the desired effect.
These days we have apps to add textured filters to photos in seconds, and generated art to create textured imagery from a text prompt.
Still, those early efforts of photographing every interesting texture I saw, and storing them off somewhere for later use, bring back fond memories.
For the electronic musicians out there, it was not so unlike walking around with an audio recorder in the hopes of sampling unique moments of sound that could later be shaped into beats and melodies. Check out Alan Wilder talking about how he used random noises to make some of Depeche Mode’s most iconic music.
This week is a time to go find those unique textures and show them in a new light.
Whether you are planning to layer them on top of another image, or create nitty gritty abstracts, go out and create some texture inspired imagery.
