Be Inspired and Learn Something New
After last week’s period of reflection, you might find yourself relating to the world with a slightly different perspective.
This cycle of contemplation and the pursuit of enlightenment has been a theme of humanity throughout the ages. One of the more common representations in art has been through the iconography of the halo.
While this Christian symbolism of gilded saints and golden halos dates all the way back to the 4th century, you can find even older depictions such as haloed Buddhas and Egyptian Gods.
From other cultures, I was intrigued by the symbolism of this photo from Scott that shows petroglyphs created by the Basketmaker people in the American southwest.
Photography has also embraced halo iconography to varying degrees.
Here we can find it in Helmut Newton’s portrait of Paloma Picasso, and in the strange symbolic still-life world of Joel-Peter Witkin.

Even more simply, a portrait with the right backlight or other unique elements can approximate the idea.
As always, you might interpret a prompt in another way that makes sense for you. For instance, these kind of headlights work just as well.
Give all that some consideration as you go out this week to photograph your own version of “Head Light.”
Last Week’s Prompt Photos for “Reflection”
Playing with reflections is a great opportunity to see the world from a new and sometimes mind bending perspective.
For example, the famous Cloud Gate sculpture by Anish Kapoor in Chicago, photographed by Steven. It is said that the design was inspired by liquid mercury.
This unexpected heart shaped reflection from Maryse in France was shared unintentionally on Valentine’s Day. She did not see the heart until several people pointed it out in the comments.
Taking the theme of self reflection to heart, Ruthie shared this one of herself in a mirror from a car show.
Nature provides so many beautiful reflection opportunities like this lovely scene from Isère, France by Marie.
There were many more amazing images shared, and it is well worth your time to have a look at the full gallery of all the photos posted for last week’s Reflection prompt.
