Be Inspired and Learn Something New
Funny story, in a quick chat with
, I suggested that our recent prompts may have been too conceptual and challenging for people.I asked him whether he thought we should do something simpler, and he responded by saying, "one of the most difficult things to do well in photography is ‘humour’. Just a thought…."
It seems Søren’s idea of simplifying the prompts is to increase the challenge level to something more difficult!
Challenge accepted.
And so my friends, this week the photo prompt is HUMOR.
That’s an open ended suggestion with a lot options for creative interpretation.
The beauty of humor is that it is one of the few connecting principles that is universal across all cultures on this planet. If you’d like to get in a silly mindset, Leslie curated an excellent gallery of worldly images for her “Share a Laugh” photo resonance which I highly recommend viewing.
Good for a smile break and some inspiration for this prompt too.
One of the most effective tools we photographers have to convey humor in our images is through the power of juxtaposition.
There is something truly fun about finding the perfect street signs and billboards to ironically pair with our subjects. Often times these occasions find us and not the other way around. About 35 seconds after I snapped that raccoon photo at the top, he leaped out of the bin and came after me. Fortunately the car was not far away as I ran screaming and laughing all the way (or my friends were laughing at me anyway.)
Juxtaposition is a street photographer’s secret weapon. When used effectively it can be laugh out loud funny, or make a serious poignant point.
How will you incorporate humor into your creations this week?
Give it some thought and share those pics with us here on Substack or on your Aminus3.com website.
Last Week’s Prompt Photos for “Patterns”
A huge thank you to everyone who shared a photo for the “Patterns” prompt last week!! There was a fantastic response with several hundred incredible images shared.
It’s hard to narrow down to just a few highlights, so I highly encourage you to see the full Patterns gallery on Aminus3 as well as checking out the Substack links below.
I have professed my joy of creating diptychs before. It can be a meditative experience to match line, shape form, and yes, even patterns too! So I humbly present to you some of my own pairings from the many excellent patterns shared this week.

See all the photos shared on Aminus3 for last week’s Patterns prompt.

I am sure I should be thrilled that you took up the idea of humour, however, I do feel slightly exposed, if it all goes to hell.... However, I have every confidence in my fellow Substackers 😅
I love the pattern diptychs! So many fabulous submissions this week, well done to all who contributed!
