Be Inspired and Learn Something New
We recently talked about balance in photography, which is echoed across many different aspects of this medium.
Anyone who has taken the leap from the “Auto” button on your camera to manual controls, has come across the great balancing of f/stop, shutter, and ISO to create the perfect exposure.
Without this right balance of camera settings, our photos would be too bright or too dark. Soon we learn how tweaking various parameters leads to different results, like slow or fast shutter, or controlling depth of field. Change one and you quickly figure out how to balance the other settings to compensate.
In digital photography, you can also apply different white balance, to create cool, warm, or wild colors in your photos.
Similarly, once you start learning how to create photos with some intentional composition, you start thinking in terms of how one part of the image balances another, from color, to the interplay of each element.
This week you are being asked to think about balance in your photography in any way or form.
You can also go for something more conceptual like the way colors blend together to create visual harmony, or you might depict the delicate balance of nature or other similar themes.
What kind of balance will you photograph this week? Give it some thought and share some photos with us on Aminus3 or Substack Notes.
Last Week’s Prompt Photos for “Doorways”
We started last week’s post on how doorways are portals from one place or state to another. This seemed to carry through to the images posted which were not only visually compelling, but a lot of great thoughts and philosophies were shared as well.
One of the themes to emerge was about how our own photos can become a doorway to our memories and experiences. Browsing back through images takes you back to places and emotions that you may have forgotten. A quick look at one of your old photos and you are instantly transported.
Another conversation about doorways had to do with the history of these old passageways which have stood for decades or even centuries. What secrets do they hold?
pondered if doorways had eyes and ears, what stories they might tell?Of course, these days doorways do have eyes and ears in the form of surveillance cameras, ring devices, and tigers too.
Giulio shares this photo from the Pigalle area of Paris, which historically was once the red light district, and home of famous cabaret venues like Moulin Rouge, before urban development and gentrification have relegated the allure of this once famous neighborhood into something less edgy.
On legendary doorways,
posted this tale of a doorway so famous that even after 25 years, and much to the dismay of the locals, tourists queue up down the street to get a photo opp.The blue door is the entry to actor Hugh Grant’s house from the 1999 film, “Notting Hill”. All these years later, it is still a sought after destination.
shared the story of the “Wood Cake House” and this man who has found catharsis by decorating his doorway and home in a most eclectic way. Here are few more doorways that were posted last week, you can see the full gallery and links below as well.

@Aminus3 Photography - this week’s prompt is “Balance”
As I went on my morning wander I was pondering on this week’s challenge and whilst photographing a horse chestnut tree flower, this little guy came into view.
Thanks for the pic feature <3
