Be Inspired and Learn Something New
Does the world seem topsy turvy? What’s down is up, and so it goes?
Those who have the luxury to take a step back might appreciate the way a good mediation or moment of quiet reflection can help to change your perspective.
Alternatively, you can meet the mayhem head on by flipping things around on your own terms.
Yes, this week you are challenged to photograph the world upside down.
There are many opportunities in photography to go upside down. You might recall from the physics of optics that objects appear upside down through a lens until the camera sets them right.
Before the magic of mirrorless cameras with digital preview, your basic “SLR”, or digital variety, required a mirror positioned between the lens and the sensor. Without it, every time you look through the viewfinder, things would appear upside down.
You can see this by taking off your lens and looking through the back, or if you’ve got one of those glass spherical lensballs, you have likely observed the reverse image it creates from light refracting through the convex surface.
Fun fact, the lenses in your eyes work in a similar way, causing you to see the world upside down before your brain turns it back around.
What are you going to photograph this week? Where to begin?
Short of finding some willing subjects to invert their world, you can get some cool effects by photographing reflections on bodies of water, puddles, or other such places.
Where will you find upside down photo opportunities?
Give it some thought, create some photos, and don’t forget to share a few with us here on Substack, or on the Aminus3 website.
Last Week’s Prompt Photos for “Monochrome”
Not surprising that a call out for “Monochrome” photos would result in so many diverse and incredible images. Over 200 photos were shared this week! It’s a shame that we don’t have a single gallery to showcase them all in a beautiful way.
We may yet start publishing these as a separate zine, or even some kind of interactive gallery as we created for last year’s “Postcards” prompt, but until then, below are just a very few random selections from the photos shared.
As always, you can click over to the full Monochrome gallery on Aminus3 plus the Substack photo links at the bottom.
A quick reminder that the prompts are open for all skill levels of photography.
It is not a competition and there are no prizes. The prompts are there to explore and inspire your own creativity. If you have been shy about sharing your images, please consider doing so as it’s a good way to learn and get feedback. Otherwise, you can always participate on your own even if you do not publish them anywhere.
If a prompt inspires you to create a photo, or gives you motivation to try something new, it has already been effective. Sharing is not a requirement for participating.
If you like these photography prompts, and want to support the creative work that goes into organizing them each week, please consider a “buy us a coffee” donation, or pledge a Substack subscription for future community features and projects.
