Be Inspired and Learn Something New
This month I kicked off a new season teaching youth photography. It has been fun to experience the magic of photography through fresh eyes.
As mentioned in my interview with
a few weeks, ago, I love how the camera can “see” things in a different way from what we see in front of us.Imagine how a long exposure captures the motion of blurring lights to create cool effects. To get a sense of it, you can find some good examples from the blur prompt.
Multi-exposure is another technique where the camera creates a different image from what we visually perceive. If your digital camera has a multi-exposure feature, or for film photographers, in-camera multi-exposures can be an imaginative way to see the world a little differently.
When I showed my students how to do this in the camera, it was like a creative lightbulb going off in their minds as they sought out different unique subjects to combine together.
Connecting back to the prompt this week, multi-exposure is all about blending two or more things together to create something new.
If you want some inspiration, check out
who has a keen artistic intuition for combining distinctive subjects together into thoughtful dreamy imagery. If your camera does not have this native function, you could always do your blending in an image editing app instead.
Where possible, I find that making images like this in-camera while out on location can be a lot of fun. Plus it is a fantastic way to spark creative ideas when you are bored with your usual images.
If multi-exposures are not your thing, there are other ways to approach the “Blended” prompt. You are of course free to interpret as you’d like.
What do you think of with the prompt, “Blended”, and what might you photograph this week?
Last Week’s Prompt Photos for “Alone”
Last week’s prompt of alone opened up several different avenues of imagery that spanned from conceptual to literal ideas.
Marie’s lone figure and empty “message in a bottle” was for me, a compelling concept for the prompt. I can almost hear Sting sending out that SOS.
A few photos explored thoughts around the balance between humanity and nature, including this one from Iranian photographer Fereshteh.
Or this thought provoking installation by artist Børre Sæthre in Oslo, Norway, photographed by mo.
Other images illustrated the beauty of being alone in nature for personal introspection, reflection, and of course — creating beautiful photography.
Some photos were a conceptual idea around being alone in your mind, even in the mix of a crowd. Another set of images depicted the intense isolation during COVID lockdowns as a street musician masks up to play to an empty venue.
There were many more themes and ideas that emerged from this thoughtful prompt. Please take a moment to go see all the photos shared on Aminus3.com.
